The picture-postcard volcano-ringed lake is best seen from the waterfront of the busiest lakeshore settlement, the town of Panajachel. Further away from the shore, the uptown spreading haphazardly over the adjacent slopes represents Panajachel at its most authentic and according to the local magazine, it is "an arresting counterpoint to the “touristy” face of that other Pana."
