Masopust, a Czech version of the carnival, in the town of Roztoky, Czech Republic, is in the 20th year of its latest incarnation attracting visitors from around the world, studied by folklorists, photographed by famous photographers -- because it is said to be the only one that still exists as a living and evolving organism where tradition and modern creativity merge and inspire. Oh yes, and because it is always huge fun for both big and small. Everyone can participate wearing anything from elaborate costumes honoring the age-old tradition to crude cardboard cutouts created that morning. The crowd gathers at the courtyard of the 16th-century Roztoky Castle and then sets off on a parade through the streets that ends in the fields on top on a nearby hill where it meets similar parades from neighboring towns where a symbolic battle is fought but in the end everybody wins amidst a dancing and singing frenzy.
