Torchito, a statue erected in 2007 to commemorate the 50 years of “Antorcha de la Independencia,” the annual torch relay the night before the Independence Day, in which the runners bear the torch through the streets and from town to town. The run starts in Guatemala City, some 140 km away, and the runners are welcome in Pana at midnight. One of Torchito’s feet is bare, honoring those of the original runners who ran the course barefoot. Panajachel, Guatemala
